Radiologic technologists are responsible for working with patients in medical imaging, interventional procedures and radiation therapy. Technologists may wish to pursue professional certification and registration to demonstrate to employers and patients their education, experience and competence in radiography. The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) offers a program through which radiologic technicians can become certified with an exam and then maintain annual registration. Candidates for certification must complete an accredited radiology program and pass an exam. Two hundred and twenty questions are asked during the three-and-a-half-hour exam.

The exam is comprised of 220 questions, including 20 “test” questions that do not count toward the final score. Questions cover the following content areas:
· Radiographic procedures (30%)
o 60 questions on positioning, anatomy and technical factors related to the thorax, abdomen, urological system, spine and pelvis, cranium and extremities
· Image production and evaluation (25%)
o Selection of technical factors (30 questions)
o Image processing and quality assurance (12 questions)
o Criteria for image evaluation (8 questions)
· Radiation protection (20% of the exam)
o Biological aspects of radiation (10 questions)
o Minimizing patient exposure (12 questions)
o Personnel protection (9 questions)
o Radiation exposure and monitoring (9 questions)
· Patient care and education (13%)
o Ethical and legal aspects (5 questions)
o Interpersonal communication (3 questions)
o Infection control (8 questions)
o Physical assistance and transfer (2 questions)
o Medical emergencies (2 questions)
o Contrast media (6 questions)
· Equipment operation and quality control (12%)
o Principles of radiation physics (10 questions)
o Radiographic equipment (10 questions)
o Quality control of radiographic equipment and accessories (4 questions)

Three and a half hours are given to complete the exam. The exam is computer-based and all questions are multiple choice. All tests are administered at PearsonVUE testing centers, more than 200 of which are located throughout the US. For international applicants, test centers may be found in Toronto, Winnipeg, Vancouver, London, Paris, Rome, Madrid, Frankfurt, Sydney, Seoul and Tokyo.
